Two Wheels Through the Paddy Fields

Cinnamon, bird sanctuaries and king-coconut stops — cycling the lanes around Galle with Idle Bikes.

17 January 2026The Round House

The lanes around Galle were made for bicycles — flat, shaded, threading between paddy fields and cinnamon, past temples and tea kiosks where a king coconut waits at exactly the right moment.

We send guests to Idle Bikes, who have explored the lush countryside around Galle since 2004 with routes through paddy fields, bird sanctuaries, cinnamon plantations and village life.

Choose your distance

The gentle Paddy Trail (12km, ~1.5 hrs) loops through the Eluvila Bird Sanctuary with a refreshing king-coconut stop in a private jungle garden. The Paddy & Lake Trail (26km) adds a scenic ride along Koggala Lake’s cinnamon plantations. And the Hiyare Hill Climb (41km) rewards the keen with a nature reserve and a long descent home.

An early 7–8am start is best — cool air, soft light, and the fields just waking up.

It is, quietly, one of the loveliest half-days on the south coast — and a fine way to earn your lunch.
