Perched atop a 12-acre working cinnamon plantation, Trebartha East is a house that exemplifies sustainable architecture, local craftsmanship, and a quiet passion for art.
Built in the round
All four bedrooms open to sweeping views over the rice paddies. An 18-metre curved pool completes the circular building — an invitation to all-day lounging, or to cool off after a hot morning at the beach.
The all-day kitchen serves fresh food and drink made on site, from produce bought from local suppliers.

Designed by the renowned Sri Lankan architect Professor Narein Perera, the Round House was constructed using locally sourced timber — a commitment to sustainability and to the island’s natural resources.
The design integrates key elements of Sri Lankan architectural vernacular, including traditional metal and stonework, blending modern sustainability with cultural heritage.
Held by the hills
Set within a working cinnamon plantation above Ahangama and surrounded by paddy, palms and jungle, Trebartha East offers an immersive experience of Sri Lanka’s tropical south-coast landscape.
The mature trees that complete the building’s circle were grown for us in central Sri Lanka. We have re-cultivated the property with indigenous fruit trees along a garden path made for strolling — or an early-morning run.
