There are faster ways to see the coast. None of them are this good. The south-coast train runs right past our doorstep, and to ride it is to understand the island at exactly the right speed.
Hop on at Ahangama and rattle along the shoreline with the doors flung open and the sea just a few metres away — one of the world’s great rail journeys, and one of its most democratic.
How to ride it well
Travel light, travel second or third class for the open doors and the breeze, and don’t over-plan. Short hops — towards Galle one way or Weligama and Mirissa the other — are the most rewarding, and our team can advise on timings.
The best carriage is the one with the doors open and the ocean filling the frame.
Pair the ride with lunch at the far end and a tuk-tuk home, and you have a half-day that costs almost nothing and stays with you for years.
