Ahangama is alive with energy, and new spots appear faster than anyone can keep up. These are the places we genuinely love and return to — mostly locally owned, world-class, and refreshingly good value.
For coffee and a slow morning
UFO is our favourite for a flat white — an aesthetically pleasing pink-and-grey room with panoramic ocean views and properly good coffee. Cactus is the spot for coolers and excellent veggie and vegan bites when the day calls for something lighter.
For sunset and a drink
Ceylon Slider brought its Weligama magic to Ahangama in style — great food, sunset sessions and drinks. Crust is the classic beach bar in the heart of town for a beer, wine, cocktail and pizza (and the best pool table around), while Hotel de Uncles — Colombo’s favourite cocktail bar — pours world-class drinks with a beachfront vibe.
For dinner worth booking
Book Brine for coastal cooking at its best, just outside town — they don’t tell you to share, but share (the pumpkin is out of this world). La Belle, tucked beside Indigo over the ocean, is a beautiful new room from old hands. And for impeccable Japanese, Hashi towards Kabalana uses fish so fresh the ocean fills any gaps in conversation.
Let our team call ahead and mention the magic words — “We have guests from the Round House” — and rules have been known to bend in your favour.
In high season you may still have to do it the old-fashioned way: turn up and take your chances. Either way, expect creativity, passion, and an experience that’s authentically Sri Lankan.
